About Us
Company 2 of the New Kent Department of Fire and Rescue is located in Quinton, Virginia in the Western end of New Kent County.
Company 2 was established in 1958 when the need for fire protection far exceeded the means of the county's single original station (Co. 1) which was, and still is, located in Providence Forge, Virginia. Company 2 was originated with 15 charter members. Our first truck was a 1958 Tank truck with a portable pump. This truck was given to Company 2 from Company 1 and was housed in a garage until the fire station was built in 1959. The original station had only 2 apparatus bays and storage area. Additions were constructed in 1972, 1974, 1988 and finally in 1993. Our station now has 5 apparatus bays, 2 kitchens (one upstairs for members and one downstairs for the various fund raising activities), a day room, male and female bunk rooms with showers, a classroom, office, tool room, and storage facilities. All this work has been completed and paid for by the company members.
In 1992 Company 2 was licensed to run First Responder/EMS calls as a Basic Life Support (BLS) non-transport agency. This was necessary to provide residents of our area with quick, efficient emergency medical service, since the county's only rescue squad is located approximately 13 miles away. In 1994 we upgraded our license to become an Advanced Life Support (ALS) non-transport agency making us the second Volunteer Fire Company to achieve this. With the arrival of our first ambulance in the spring of 1998 and the second one in the fall of 1998, the license was again upgraded to ALS transport. In December of 1999 we took delivery on the county's first heavy rescue truck designed for vehicle accidents and hazardous material incidents.
On October 5, of 1998 the department went online with this Web Site.
In January 1999 the county fire system was reorganized and New Kent Volunteer Fire Department Co. 2 was renamed to Quinton Volunteer Fire & EMS Co. 2.
The level of training for our company ranges from Firefighter 1 and 2; Hazardous Materials awareness and operations; Aerial Operations; Driver Pump Operations; Officer 1 through 3; and all levels of BLS and ALS medical training. EMS certifications are for both firefighters and active EMS personnel.
We currently respond to calls with the following apparatus: one engine, one tanker, one heavy rescue truck (licensed as BLS), one utility vehicle, one brush truck, two ambulances (both licensed as ALS), and one chief buggy.
The members of Company 2 are proud of our accomplishments, our equipment, and our station. We enjoy giving tours to youth and civic groups, and usually have open houses with equipment demonstrations during Fire Prevention Week.
